Building Your Blog: Linky Parties

Welcome to our Building Your Blog series!! As I mentioned last week, our goal for It’s A Blog Party is to help you build your blog, primarily through Linky Parties. So, that’s where we are starting the series.

What is a Linky Party? Well…if you have been around here, you probably already know. But, if not…let me explain.

A Linky Party or sometimes referred to as a Blog Carnival, Blog Hop or even a Meme…is a place where you can add your post to the party and then other visitors can click on your post…therefore creating traffic and new readers for you.

Here are few guidelines that most bloggers who host a linky party ask you to follow…

Linky Party Guidelines:

  • Link ONLY to individual post not your homepage
  • Follow the party topic {post recipe on food linky, crafts on a craft linky, etc}
  • Add a link back to the host or their button {it’s best to link directly to the party and not their homepage, but either is fine}

Linky Party Platforms:

Most bloggers are using one of two different link platforms. The first is Linky Tools, I personally don’t know a lot about them. Way, WAY back I used them, then when Inlinkz came along with their thumbnail image tool, I switched and never went back.

The second platform is Inlinkz, we use them for all the parties here as well as Cupcake Tuesday over on Hoosier Homemade. They are easy to use, and cost only $2 per month.

How to link up:

It’s really easy to add your link, but there are a few tricks that I wanted to share with you on HOW to link up to get the best results. The linky will look like this…

Simply click on the blue button to add your link, it will ask for the URL, remember your POST URL, not your homepage, then the title of your post…like Memorial Day Picnic Food, and then your email. Click submit and you are added.

Best results:

During my first year of building Hoosier Homemade, I linked up to hundreds of parties, often staying up to wee hours of the morning to be first in line. Especially for parties that have lots of links added, it’s VERY important to be in the top 20, even the top 10 is best.

For example…last week I linked my Baker’s Rack to the Spray Paint Party on Thrifty Decor Chick. I was lucky enough to click over right when her party went live, I ended up being number 5, which resulted in 1,237 hits just from that party. YES! You read that right!  And possibly more pageviews if the visitor liked what they saw and looked around a bit.

With that being said, a little while back, we decided to add a randomizing feature to our parties. That way, everyone linking up would have an opportunity to be at the top. After giving it a try for awhile, it seems like readers aren’t too thrilled with it. So we will be returning to the old format. First come…first serve!

Next, leave a comment..tell the host thanks, not only is it common courtesy but you also are giving yourself a shout out. Most blogs now have a plugin called comment luv, and your last post shows up in your comment. If the blog does not have comment luv, it will show your name and blog, therefore giving yourself another shout out. Be sure that your Blogger profile has your blog name and URL on it, so it will show up.

    I have just started and am trying to build my followers and have more traffic. I have linked up to several parties BUT I cannot figure out how to get the links/buttons/badges in the actual post. I have them at the bottom of the blog. I would like to have them with my actual post but when I copy and past the url link (words) it stays as words in my posting and I need the picture. Can u help me?
    Thanks so much.

    Hi Robin, You need to switch your post to HTML and then add the link. Then you can switch back to Visual and it should be there. Feel free to email me at hoosierhomemade {at} gmail {dot} com, I’m happy to help.
