Building Your Blog: Effective Twitter

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Let me start with a little disclaimer: by no means am I an expert on this subject, far from it. Social media is an evolving animal that constantly changes. What I pass along today are just suggestions gleaned from personal experience and a lot of trial and error.

We all have goals for our blogs, whether it’s to generate a second income, or to be our sole source of income. Some simply are blogging as an outlet for their talent. Whatever tour goal is we all have one thing in common…..we desire people to read the thoughts and ideas we share on our blogs.

But with the vastness of the internet comes problems, one being simply getting noticed. One tool to help accomplish this is Twitter. What follows are suggestions that have worked for us, I’m sure this is not a complete list and as I mentioned above social media evolves and you have to evolve with it and experiment and tweek these as you progress.

  • Get a twitter account and make it visible on your blog…..this may seem very basic but it surprises me the number of the blogs I come across that either have no twitter account or provide no link to their account on their blog. You can’t get followers if people can’t find you.
  • Place your Twitter link in the top fold of your blog…..this area is usually reserved for ads that generate revenue for you but a savvy blogger realizes that without readers and followers there is no revenue to generate.
  • Follow other people in your niche…..just as you are looking to gain followers everyone else has the same mindset with few exceptions. But be careful who you follow the internet is open to anyone and there are some real dooseys out there.
  • Network with other bloggers… have the ability to send direct messages to people that follow you, the key is to first send an open invite to the person by tagging them in a tweet using the @ sign in front of their name.
  • Promote others not just yourself…..with the number of tweets that fly into peoples dashboards the easiest way to get yours to stand out it to mention other bloggers. Most times this will generate a re-tweet and sometimes more. It helps to get you connected with other people
  • Timing and Frequency….. this is one area where you will need to experiment but we have found that our most effective tweets are between 9:00 – 12:00 a.m. and 4:00 – 9:00 p.m., don’t ask me to explain this it is simply observation on our part. Now I know this becomes a problem area with those who do this part-time so I suggest you work with either tweetdeck or hootsuite. Both of these allow you to write and schedule your tweets to be posted during the day.

These are purely a starting point to help you with Twitter. The final piece of advice I can give is to be persistent, everything that you do with blogging boils down to persistence. If you put in the time it will grow.

Thanks for stopping by, follow me and I’ll follow you. It’s how we grow.
